CD Review – David Holmes “Ocean’s Thirteen” – Warner Sunset/Warner Brothers
When I got this CD to review, I had mixed emotions. While I liked all the music so far and I saw “Ocean’s 11”..I totally hated “Ocean’s 12”. It was one of the worst big studio movies I had ever seen. No script, even less of a plot..only Catherine Zeta Jones actually acted in the film, it was terrible mess. So when I saw “Ocean’s 13” was coming out, I knew I was going to skip it, no way was I going to toss another 10 bucks away like I did for 12.
That said, I think the scores for the 3 films are quite cool, David Holmes is a megatalent who has released 3 great underground albums. His sly updated lounge/jazzed up score is pretty tight. While it does retain the vibe of the Rat Pack, the pacing is more brisk and has a slight electronica feel that allows Holmes to keep one foot in the 60’s and one toe in today.
My one complaint, small as it is,is this: as in the movies, you never feel any menace, the outcome, the danger, the suspense is never felt either onscreen or in the score. Its a major flaw in these films, while Clooney and Co. play it fast and funny, the original movie of Ocean’s 11 was very dark and tragic. Otherwise then that, this score is pretty quirky and fun.
Recommended.
